Braces for Teens

Phoenix, AZ

As an orthodontist and pediatric dentist, we can determine if and when a patient needs to consider wearing braces. In many cases, children will have the most significant benefit from receiving teeth straightening treatment around the age of 10. Braces for teens involves placing traditional metal brackets and wires to a teen’s teeth so their teeth will gradually shift into the proper alignment. Braces for teens are available at Camelback Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodonticsin Phoenix and the surrounding area. By straightening the teeth during the teenage years, it is easier to straighten their teeth than adult teeth. We can customize the treatment to the patient’s needs, as well. Call us at 602-595-3531 to schedule an appointment and learn more about braces for teens today.

The Process of Getting Braces

During the initial consultation, our orthodontist will examine the patient’s teeth to decide what straightening treatment will be most effective. We will help the parents of teen patients go over the various treatment options. Although straighter teeth are beneficial for many people, there are cases where the person’s teeth are straight enough, and braces will not be necessary. If necessary, we will also take X-rays and impressions of the teeth to design the treatment. As an orthodontist, we will create a treatment that works best for the patient. We can devise a plan that addresses cases of underbite, overbite, overcrowding, or gaps between teeth. Each patient is unique, and treatment must be specific to the person to be effective.

The Treatment

To begin, the dentist will prepare the surface of the teeth. This entails cleaning and conditioning and could take between ten to thirty minutes. The teeth are primed for the adhesive, after which the orthodontist will place the brackets on the specified positions once the brackets are in place, the dentist will place the wire into the brackets. The wire will apply pressure to help move the teeth quickly into their proper position. After placing the braces, the patient will need to visit the dentist in another three or four weeks. During this appointment, the dentist will adjust the tightness of the old wire or replace it. The new wire is usually stronger and tighter than the previous one to keep the teeth moving. Dental appointments are essential throughout the treatment duration. Braces options available for teens include: Conventional metal braces This is the most common type of braces. Unlike the metal braces used decades ago, newer braces are smaller, more comfortable, and more attractive. These braces usually consist of stainless steel bands, wires, and brackets that are attached to the teeth throughout treatment. Clear Braces Clear braces are an excellent option for teens who do not like the visibility of metal braces. Clear braces consist of translucent material, are discreet, and are less conspicuous. Like traditional metal braces, clear braces are attached to the teeth throughout the teeth straightening treatment.

Caring for Braces

Since food particles can get stuck easily in wired braces, kids wearing them must put in extra effort to maintain oral hygiene. It is vital to brush after meals and floss daily. The orthodontist may provide a unique flosser and toothbrush to use for cleaning the braces. Regular visits to the dentist are essential for cleaning and checkups. The dentist may go on to teach the teen how to brush correctly and the type of toothpaste to use. The teenager should avoid certain foods such as popcorn, hard and sticky candy, and gum, which may damage the braces. Sugary drinks can also be an issue because they may cause cavities. The pressure of braces on the teeth can make them feel slightly uncomfortable sometimes, especially after new adjustments. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help. If the teen has a loose wire or bracket or a poking wire, an immediate appointment with the orthodontist is necessary. The dental profession will correct the problem and cover sharp areas of the braces with orthodontic wax.

The Benefits of Braces for Teens

An aligned smile is good for the teeth. It is easier to brush and floss straight teeth, therefore preventing plaque and removing bacteria responsible for tooth decay. Crooked teeth can damage nearby teeth and soft tissues of the mouth. Getting aligned teeth with braces for teeth can also help to boost the teenager’s confidence. They can smile and interact confidently without worrying about the appearance of their smile. To keep the teenager on track with the teeth straightening procedure, parents need to help them understand the long-term benefits of braces. Many young adults often focus on the immediate impact of the braces and how it may interfere with their lifestyle. Still, it pays to help them realize that having straight teeth will benefit them in the future. Teenagers are also sometimes worried about pain. Although the pain typically only lasts an hour or two after the appointment, parents can provide pain relievers to help minimize the pain.
